During the trial, Zhang's attorney argued that Li had knowingly purchased a potentially fake painting and should not be entitled to a refund. They pointed out that Li had been warned by Zhang to examine the painting before agreeing on a price and that he had sufficient expertise as a dealer in antiques and artworks to recognize any potential issues with authenticity.

Li countered by presenting evidence of his own losses due to buying what he believed were genuine works only later discovered to be fakes. He also produced an expert witness statement from History himself confirming that he recognized one of his paintings being sold at market prices between RMB3000-5000 (USD $400-700).

The judge ultimately found in favor of Li based on History's testimony confirming his suspicions about the counterfeit nature of both paintings sold by defendant Zhang.
